SINGLE BARRELL RECORD @ West Australian Gun Club 2 Day DTL Carnival

A combination of perfect conditions and 100+ shooters at the West Australian Gun Club annual two day carnival provided for records and personal bests on the weekend of 16-17th of May 2009.  The club hosted shooters from as far as Canada, Queensland, our own state towns of Carnarvon to Albany and across to Kalgoorlie and all places in between, all vying for a share of the $9,000+ trophies on offer.
The weekend commenced with a 20 target Points Score event that finished with David Fox on 114/114 taking Overall from AA - Jim Hamilton 113/114, A - Chris Smith 61/62, B – Alan Sexton 74/75 and C – Isaac Buttendag 55/60.

Event 2 - 25 Single Barrel, that ended in a display of “champagne shooting” as Neil McWhirter finished Overall with a RECORD score 185/185 and Jim Hamilton, bridesmaid again, on 184/185.  Nevertheless Jim has been in stunning form and shot well all weekend, breaking through with a win later in the day.
Neil’s single barrel effort is, according to those in the know, a “New State Single Barrel Record” and James 184 was a significant achievement and personal best.  The Grade winners: A – Ashley Chester 25/25, B – Vince Oliveri 29/31 and C – David Levingston 23/25.

Event 3 - 25 target Point Score closed with P Finis taking Overall on 228/228 from AA - David Fox 227/228.  The grade winners: A – Alan (Irish) Longstaff 128/129, B – Laurie Oliveri 74/75, and C – Isaac Buttendag 71/75.

Our final event for Saturday was the Winchester sponsored 30 Double Barrel. Great targets and conditions produce great results and happy shooters, demonstrated by no fewer than 42 possibles from a field of 105 shooters…now that is a phenomenal percentage!
In spite of the diminishing light conditions this event provided some terrific shooting, especially, from a young Carnarvon C grader, Luke Smith, down on his first shoot in which he managed 92/93 and along the way gave a few of AA boys a run for their money.
The shoot-off continued under lights with Jim Hamilton, Bill Sims, Jarred Baker and Neil McWhirter the last ones standing. Eventually it was James Hamilton who outlasted the others taking Overall on 129/129 from AA - Bill Sims 128/129, A - Arthur Paget 104/105, B – Laurie Oliveri 88/89 and C – Luke Smith 92/93.

Sunday morning was fine, calm and a little frosty (not the attitude towards the Handicapper) but Glen Coles and Mark Bore had the bacon, eggs, baked beans and coffee flowing to all who needed a little sustenance before the big day.  The barrel warmer and body warmer (for us who are getting older) event was a 15 target Point Score graded event.  The boys from Carnarvon got up this time with A De luz Overall on 81/81 from AA – Neil McWhirter 80/81, A- Bob Boyd 74/75, B- Rocky Isaia 43/45 and C – Laurie Amazzini 42/45.

Claremont Firearms sponsored event 6, the 45 target Medley, which tested quite a few of the competitors but it was again, after a shoot-off, Neil McWhirter on 149/150 claiming Overall from A – Arthur Paget 148/150, AA – David Fox 99/100, B – Jill Moore 72/75 and C – Russell Jaggard 71/75.  It was also a great effort by Jill to win B grade as she has just arrived from Surat, Queensland and did not have a gun. However, our lads being a selfless group when it comes to young ladies, promptly provided her with three different guns over the weekend.

The final event for the weekend was the eagerly awaited “Miroku Challenge” sponsored by Roy Alexander (Himself) and Sons.  With a 12G Miroku Sporter on offer and prizes down to 10th place it was always going to be a hotly contested Handicap event.  At the end of the 50 targets we had 7 possibles on the board, all AA or A grade shooters which surprised most.  A further 10 targets whittled the group down to 4 but in the end it was Geraldton shooter Bert Boschetti 83/83 taking overall from Mike Foley 82/83 of WAGC, 3rd Tim Steer 76/77, 4th Colin Gilbert 61/62, 5th Trevor Morris 56/58, 6th Tony Burnard 55/58, Gary Smith 50/51, 8th Peter (PJ) Forner 82/83, 9th Terry Hearn 81/83 and Glen O’Brien 63/65.

Overall High gun was Neil McWhirter 357/360, Ladies: Ashley Chester 344/360 – congratulations to Ashley for achieving AA grade; we believe she is the first lady to achieve AA in WA since 1992 a great effort, Junior: Regan Vodden 337/360, Veteran: Rick Boschetti 350/360, AA - Jim Hamilton 355/360, A - Colin Gilbert 347/360, B - Laurie Oliveri 339/360 and C - Russell Jaggard 327/360.
Congratulations to all the winners and those who achieved a personal best over the weekend. The targets, weather and the shooter harmony made for a very enjoyable and successful carnival.
